Reading a Shaft Spec Sheet Correctly
Flex, weight, torque, and material each shape performance, and none of them tell the whole story alone. Here's what the numbers mean once you're actually watching shots land.
A Relative Label, Not a Fixed Standard
Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) aren't standardized between manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play noticeably softer than a "Stiff" from another. Flex is better read as a description of how much a shaft bends and unloads during the downswing relative to your own speed and tempo.
Too flexible for your swing speed, and face angle at impact gets inconsistent while spin climbs too high. Too stiff, and you lose feel and may never load the shaft enough to launch the ball usefully.
Steel vs. Graphite vs. Multi-Material
Steel
Heavier and more consistent shaft to shaft, giving precise feedback and control. The standard choice in iron and wedge shafts for players who value feel over raw distance.
Graphite
Lighter weight raises swing speed for players who benefit from it, and dampens vibration for a softer feel. Standard in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids, and increasingly common in irons for slower-speed players.
Multi-Material
Pairs a steel tip section with a graphite body to blend feel and consistency with reduced weight — a growing category in iron shafts built for a wider speed range.
The Numbers Behind the Flex Label
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load. Lower torque generally means a more stable feel for faster, more aggressive swings, while higher torque adds feel and a softer release for smoother tempos.
Shaft weight interacts with flex more than most golfers expect: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating tends to play softer and boost clubhead speed, while a heavier shaft in the same flex plays firmer with more control — and shifts how high the ball climbs before it starts to fall.
